Today’s post comes with a slightly different twist.
A) It’s retro (as in circa 2011, talk about a blast from the past)
B) It’s pre-baby… so just hubs and I
C) It’s something that I plan to do on a weekly basis… not archived vintage photos, per se (although that could be the case when we start off), but strictly something which only involves my partner and I.
Allow me to explain.
So earlier this week I was sitting down with my therapist (I know I know… so cliché! But this is New York and pretty much everyone I know has one. Plus it helps me clear my thinking, so why not a therapist?). I was in the midst of telling her the intricate details of my existing woes – you know, baby, job, balancing motherhood + career, the usual, when suddenly she interjects with, “what about your relationship with your husband?”
What about it, I thought. It’s fine.
… It’s there, isn’t it?
I knew, right then, from the look she gave me (this woman I’ve known for the past four years), that she wanted something more. So it got me thinking, perhaps there IS something to be said, the need to focus on my relationship with my husband. Certainly I hadn’t given it much thought before this.
It’s all too easy to coast... to assume, to operate everyday like a well-oiled machine and think that everything is all good. Generally speaking, you only see me post about all of the fun things we do as a family. The fact is, no matter how great our lives can be (and I recognize that I am one lucky girl), there’s always room for improvement. Hubs and I could certainly afford to spend more time together, for instance, or – alternatively, I could spend more time THINKING about our relationship, focusing on what’s good, what needs tweaking, and all of the vast middle ground in between.
To make a long story short (recognizing that I’ve basically written a novel already), I went back into the vault and started to reminisce over things that we enjoyed as a couple… adventures, stolen kisses, sweet whispers, long walks on the beach – all of the things that seem right and make our union whole. Not only do I wish to reignite that feeling, but more importantly, I hope to spend a little bit of extra time each week to stop and appreciate them. Life is short, and before you know it, our little man will be all grown up, and I certainly don’t want to wait until then to zero-in on my relationship with my husband. You know what they say – ain’t no time like the present.
So with all that said, these are some special moments captured from Cape Town, where we visited a Cheetah Sanctuary (Cheetah Outreach) in South Africa. We were actually staying at the Spier Wine Estate in the Wine Country Stellenbosch for my cousin’s wedding, and just happened to meander into this impressive preservation by sheer happenstance, and I must say… it was truly one of the more unique encounters I’ve experienced, and who better to share it with than with my partner-in-crime?
