For whatever reason (could be that we’re counting down to the end of the year, or could be that hubby and I have been uncharacteristically sedentary this Christmas), I’ve been having all sorts of travel flashbacks lately. Last week, hubby sent me an e-mail which totally took me back, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, of South Africa, has been named World’s Leading Eco-Lodge at the 2012 World Travel Awards! (That's two years in a row now, go Sabona!).
It’s always nice to see a place that you’ve personally experienced (and enjoyed) receive accolades and recognition. In this case, I am also particularly pleased, as I feel like our Safari experience last Thanksgiving definitely ranked amongst some of the best adventures we’ve shared as a couple (I'd put it up there next to the desert dreamscapes of Al Maha). Being in a place as remote as the Sabona Wildlife Reserve really re-defines the idea of “getting away from it all.” What I especially like about the Dwyka Tented Lodge, is the very feeling that you are out and amongst the wild, while at the same time having all of the amenities which evoke the comforts of home (bubble baths anyone?).
One of my favorite Sanbona memories was – having gone on an evening game ride to see a hunting cheetah (more on that another time!), only to return home… where we found candles lit up everywhere, replete with a freshly drawn bubble bath, champagne, and rose petals scattered about our tent. Now that’s luxury at her finest hour!! It’s no wonder that Sanbona was recently ranked among the top "glamping" destinations by Vogue.
