Ever since power returned to lower Manhattan Friday evening, hubby and I have just been rejoicing and grinning ear to ear. Much of our time has been spent catching up on basic amenities such as cleaning & laundry (exciting stuff!)… with the remaining part dedicated to reconnecting with friends. It’s just nice to feel like normalcy is slowly returning to this city.
After venturing out for errands, we opted to spend a relaxed Sunday evening at Acme, a little downtown brasserie that’s been recently taken over by new ownership. The chef, Mads Refslund, was one of the founding chefs at Noma – a restaurant in Copenhagen that is definitely on my lust list. In spite of his decidedly non-southern roots, the chef still keeps an element of southern sensitivity alive on the menu, with some creative & delectable fare that NY Magazine describes as “fashionably rustic.”
I have fond memories of the place, given that we had a fantastic girls’ night out here back in March – when a dear friend was visiting from the West Coast. Back then, it was Acme’s Beer and Bread Porridge feature on Grubstreet that drew me in… but what won us ALL over were the Duck in a Jar teaser, with a fantastically-cooked Arctic Char, replete with other flavorful sweets such as Bread Pudding Griddle Cake and Danish Doughnuts. Really, I’m salivating at the mouth all over again!
Of course, it being a post-hurricane weekend, we were served a "Post-Sandy Limited Menu." Nevertheless, the food was beyond delightful! Even the ever so anti-scenester hubby was impressed! I was also quite happy to just experience a laid-back, fuss free Acme -- which was not at all like the Acme I knew back in March (think: jam-packed, shouting conversations, and long waits). Tonight, however, things were executed to perfection, and I left with an enriched and full tummy, sated and relaxed… happy to be with the man I love, and who I know loves me. Life is good!
