The night before I left for Jamaica, I had a pre-birthday bash with my girlfriends at the downtown eatery Peels (offspring of the dark alley Freemans restaurant, sans the hunting lodge motif).
I can still recall how excited I was that day. There is always this unique sense of excitement that invariably accompanies the onset of a birthday, as the undulating curve of shifting expectations sets in (will I like it, or will it suck?).
Led by a refreshed state of mind, I opted for the ubiquitous, season favorite hue of mint, paired with a light silk and some ultra-femme accessories (loving my House of Harlow necklace, also worn at the Pink Agenda benefit gala). The theme was both sentimental and romantic.
The most memorable part of the evening was when I realized how lucky I was to have such wonderful friends sitting before me (I love girls nights!). It sounds cheesy, but often times I find it can be quite difficult and isolating in this city, particularly given the transient proclivity of its inhabitants. In the past three years, I have definitely bid adieu to many dear friends whom I’ve known for years on end. Moments like that can make you feel at a loss – vulnerable and homeless somehow.
However, that night, as my girlfriends giddily sang “Happy Birthday” to me (slightly out of tune ladies) – I couldn’t help but beam and be thankful. May was indeed a great month. Now, onwards to June!!!
